Tribe expedition May / June 2017 to the Canary Islands

Tribe expedition May / June 2017 to the Canary Islands

Our mission (we have chosen to accept it), is to invade the little known (some say fabled) exotic island of myths, legends and dreams know as Lanzarote.

Anyway, Gem and I will be hosting a date flexible dive trip for all comers. We are planning to be in Playa Blanca between the dates 28th May and the 11th June 2017.

What will you see (maybe)?

– The Museo Atlantico
– Angel Sharks
– Octopus
– Wrecks
– Cuttle fish
– Turtles
– Seahorses

If you can join us for all, week one, week two or just a few random days, you can organise your own flights and accommodation (Gem and I are booking through Thomsons, flying from Birmingham and staying at the Tropical Island THB hotel).

You will notice, because you are very clever, that the first week is in school hols and the second week is blissfully outside of them. No more moaning & no excuses from you teachers and parents!

Gem and I will organise the diving with Dawn Dives Academy.

Their prices are on their website so you can select the number of dives that you want to do, work out the cost and then let us know so we can book the dives for you.

  • We can organise the diving to suit all experience levels.
  • Dawn Dives Academy run daily boat, shore & night dives around the island of Lanzarote.
  • Click here to see some of the sites on offer.
Gem and I will be running courses during our stay.

Currently on offer are:

  • Open Water
  • Advanced Open Water
  • Deep Diver
  • Wreck Diver
  • Night Diver
  • Nitrox
  • Navigation

If you want to do a certification that is not on this list, please ask us and we may be able to accommodate you.

S.S. Thistlegorm – Shaab Ali
Probably the most famous of the Red Sea wrecks. The 129m English Freighter was bombed by German aviation on 6th October 1941. Today she creates an artificial reef on a sandy bottom at 32m max depth. She is home to an enormous variety of marine life and is especially popular with large schooling fish.

This is a world renowned dive site, situated at the tip of the Sinai. Two small ergs are joined by a vertical wall dropping into the abyss. At Shark Reef the current allows you to drift along the wall, rich with colourful corals.

Abu Nuhas
Also known as the ‘Ships Graveyard’, this reef is dangerously positioned close to the busy shipping lanes of the Gulf of Suez. This reef has claimed more ships than any other in the area. Why not start your diving adventure today…

Itinerary: Central Atolls

Dates: 6th – 14th May 2017

Aboard: M/V Sea Spirit

The Vessel…

Rebuilt in 2002, the M/V Sea Spirit is the embodiment of a comfortable and spacious scuba diving liveaboard vessel in the Maldives.

Her wooden hull has been specifically designed to optimize sailing through the waters of the Maldives, while her interior has been fitted out to heighten comfort and relaxation for guests on board. Catering up to 12 divers, her 6 en-suite cabins are lavishly fitted and fully air conditioned. Separate dining and relaxation areas provide plenty of space to unwind after a full day of diving.

Facilities to suit photographers and ample storage space can be found on board, alongside an extensive DVD library and multi-system home theatre with surround sound. For divers interested in learning more species in the Maldives, the available on on board library provides marine identification books along with other literary pieces.

The Itinerary…

The ‘Central Atolls’ itinerary takes you to a selection the best dives sites in the area to show you the best of the Maldives. The nutrient-rich waters in these areas make for spectacular sightings. Keep an eye out for grey reef sharks, hammerheads, eagle rays and more on this exciting Maldives diving adventure.

Itinerary highlights…

**PLEASE NOTE** The dive sites below are just an example of the route taken and are not guaranteed. All dives sites are subject to weather conditions and local seasonal knowledge and the final route taken is at the absolute discretion of the captain and dive guides.

Orimas Thila – North Ari
Although sharks are not usually the highlight of the northern itineraries, Orimas Thila is an exception to the rule. Here, grey reef sharks can be observed circling and wriggling whilst they are being cleaned. The best spot to view them from is down-current either on the sandy bottom or from a ledge out of sight, kneeling or using a reef hook if the current is running.

Guraidhoo Kandu – South Male
Since the eastern side of the channel is open ocean, large predatory fish can regularly be spotted here. This site is famous for sightings of sharks, schools of eagle rays and the occasional sail fish and hammerheads. The best condition to do the dive is when the current is flowing into the atoll.

The dive begins on the outer reef following the current into the atoll. Most of the pelagic species can be observed on the eastern side, where the reef drops off into the deep ocean. At the end of the dive in the channel, along the reef you can find overhangs with plenty of soft coral growth and small fish.

Fish Head – North Ari
Fish Head also known as Shark Point or Mushimasmingili Thila, fits the classic definition of a thila – a large isolated flat top reef rising sharply from the inner atoll floor at 40 to 50m to around 10m from the surface. It is one of the best sites for seeing sharks. Featuring a series of caves and overhangs in between where you can see thousands of blueline snapper against a backdrop of black coral bushes and large gorgonians.

Note: All dive sites are subject to weather conditions and cannot be guaranteed.
